The scenic Muskegon River and its tributaries crisscross this 10,000-acre natural area just minutes from downtown Muskegon. The site is primarily forested, with river floodplain and wetland areas spread throughout the interior. Most of the area is not accessible by vehicles, so hikers and canoeists can enjoy an excellent wilderness experience.

Wildlife Viewing

All kinds of waterfowl are attracted to the rivers, streams, and wetlands found on this area. Mallards, blue-winged teal, and Canada geese are common.

Visit during spring migration to see them in their colorful breeding plumage. There is a good dirt road off Maple Island Road south of the area headquarters that leads to a nice hiking trail. This trail follows a dike that runs through a river bottom flooding. Bald eagles are occasionally seen perched in dead tree snags along this trail, especially during winter. Stop at the area headquarters for a map and information on current wildlife viewing highlights.

This area is open to public hunting. Contact the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for hunting seasons and regulations.

MapDirections

At the intersection of US-31 and M-46 in Muskegon, turn east on M-46 and travel 7 miles to Maple Island Road and proceed about 4 miles until you see signs for the area headquarters. The trail access road is about one mile south of the headquarters on Maple Island Road.
