This little-known natural area sits on the shores of Saginaw Bay. A narrow, C-shaped peninsula sticks out into the Bay creating a protected cove that is excellent for wildlife watching. Part of the site is highly developed to accommodate RV users and family camping, but there are also 4 nature trails that traverse woodlands, marshes, and the Saginaw Bay shoreline.

Wildlife Viewing

An elevated observation platform at the campground parking lot is a good place to begin your search for wildlife at Pinconning County Park. The Saginaw Bay coastal wetland beach area includes reed grasses, cattails, and bulrushes. Enjoy two viewing towers, along with a handicap accessible boardwalk on the north (Marsh) trail. This platform provides a good view of the shoreline vegetation that rims the small bay. Ducks, geese, and herons often congregate in this protected area. To get a closer look at them and other wetland animals, hike the 2/3-mile Marsh Trail, which begins at the north end of the camp road. The woodland trails in the park’s interior provide opportunities to see deer, squirrels, raccoons, songbirds, porcupines, foxes, and coyotes. The park is open year-round.

Directions

From Bay City, take I-75 north to Exit 181. Turn right (east) onto Pinconning Road and proceed about 5 miles to the park entrance.
