Outdoor Activities

The northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan is known for the variety and abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities. Thousands of acres of state forests and parks provide ample opportunities for quality hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking.

Hunting

If people are interested in hunting American woodcock (or ruffed grouse) in Michigan during their visit, they may consider arriving the weekend before or staying after the meeting.  A 3-day non-resident hunting license is $30.00 and a season hunting license is $69.00.  October weather is very pleasant (warm days, 55 F, with cool nights) and ideal for hunting. Hunting licenses can be purchased online using the Michigan Department of Natural Resources E-License system.

Fishing

October is a great time to fish Michigan's rivers and streams for trout and salmon. Check out the Michigan Inland Trout and Salmon Guide for stream maps and fishing regulations. A 24 hour fishing license good for all species of fish can be purchased for $7 online using the Michigan Department of Natural Resources E-License system.

Camping and Other Outdoor Recreation

Michigan's state forests and parks are full of opportunities for camping, hiking, biking, boating, and countless other outdoor adventures. Visit the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Recreation and Camping web page to learn more about all of the opportunities available. The RAM Center is located adjacent to North Higgins Lake State Park and is on the north shore of beautiful Higgins Lake. The park has 174 modern campsites and is located on what was once the world's largest seedling nursery. The variety of tree, plant, bird and animal species make the park attractive for outdoor activities.

Attendees can make arrangements with the RAM Center or a nearby hotel/motel if they want to come early or stay late.
